Sewer Straw
This piece comments about the consequences of excess and waste, specifically regarding our precious drinking water. The intent of the sculpture is to draw the viewers’ attention down the straw to the connection to the sewage grate. Our drinking water is affected by our sewage system in many ways and we should be mindful of what we put into our waste water stream.
The sculpture’s iconic nature and notions of Americana parallel Claes Oldenburg and Andy Warhol. The playfulness of the bendy straw returns the viewers to childhood. This carefree attitude is disrupted as the viewer struggles with the sculpture’s suggestive direction. The object invites us to more closely examine our actions and their effect on our water supply.
